My mom worked in a hobby store when I was little. I remember being surrounded in fake fur, wiggly eyes, plastic doll faces, pom poms and Mod Podge. The store owners were really nice and let me tag along each day with my mom. One of the crafts that I remember the most were these powder room pals. We actually made girls and boys.
One morning before school I announced to my mom that I had to make a craft project for school to be submitted in the School Field Day Fair. She panicked and said, "Oh Shelly!, wish you would have told me sooner". My mom didn't want me to be unprepared, so she handed me the powder room pal that she had finished. Not realizing how big of a deal this really was.
I marched home SMILING with a first place BLUE ribbon in hand! I was even featured in the local newspaper! My mom was so embarrassed and secretly grinning that her powder room pal had won 1st Place in the crafting category. We had made so many together but she just happened to grab one of hers....we never told anyone until now. Wish I still had the original.
Last summer while Dan was on business, Jake and I sat down and made this little gal. I told you about her in this post but she was missing her hair until a few weeks ago.
I decided to make another one today and put together this fun little tutorial. This is such a fast easy project and great for the little ones :)
Who knows! Maybe you'll win a Blue Ribbon too! lol
Supplies
fabric scraps for dress, arms and legs.
felt scraps for hands and shoes
yarn for hair
wiggly eyes
pom pom for nose
tacky glue
Mod Podge
straight pins
craft paint for face color
2 sponge brushes
scissors
ribbon for hair bow
button for dress or other embellishments
tp or paper towel roll (wrapping paper tubes work great too) Just cut down to size
Paint half of empty roll with your choice of paint color. I like to mix antique white or buttermilk with a bit of chocolate brown. Let dry.
Apply Mod Podge to fabric with sponge brush.
Apply fabric as shown on paper roll. Make sure to cover the area you didn't paint.
Apply glue to wrong side of fabric for arms. Attach to sides as shown. Apply glue to right side top of leg fabric and glue inside paper roll. Let dry.
Cut out circles for shoes. Add a drop of glue, overlap slightly and pin to dry. When glue is set, apply glue to front of shoe and glue on back of leg fabric. Pin and let dry. Cut small shapes for hands or gloves and glue on back of fabric arms.
Glue eyes and nose. I switched out my nose later from brown to red. She didn't want to be a brown noser. ...she said. Also, glue a pretty lace collar. Let dry.
Fold a bunch of yarn around your hand until you get just enough for some funky hair. Tie a knot in the middle as shown. Add a dab of glue and stuff in roll and clip hair. Give her some bangs, long hair, short hair, braids. Finish with cute hair bow or bow tie for the boy. Add a button and your finished!
Hope you have fun making these cute little paper pals :)

Enjoyed reading your blog tonight. I have missed a few. My heart skipped a beat when I read about Aaron. It lept with giggles at sweet Jake, and glowed warmly with your childhood art. How wonderful to have had a mom that worked in a craft store. To me, it would all be just like candy!

sooo cute! I love the toilet paper gals. I have to make invites for a slumber party for my daughter today she turns 9 next Thursday and I decided to use yarn for their hair to give it some texture.
